Essential WordPress Plugins

If you are developing a blog, WordPress is well suited for its quick and easy installation, upgrades, and expandability with the use of plugins.  A plugin performs a set of actions either on the administration side, the user side or a combination of both.  The following is a short list of must-have plugins for WordPress to get you started.

  1. Really Simple Sitemap:  This plugin will generate a "Page of Posts" for you (not a sitemap.xml file) or more commonly known as your sitemap.  You have the ability to create a page with links to each and every one of your posts and pages with options for sort order.  Having this will allow your visitors to find any of your articles without knowing the category or date it was posted.
  2. Google XML Sitemaps:  This will generate a sitemap.xml file anytime your posts or pages change.  Create a new post, and it will add it to your sitemap.xml file and notify the search engines that there is a new version of the file for them to upload.
  3. Google Analyticator:  This plugin allows you to use Google Analytics for your blog and also displays Google Analytics statistics on your admin Dashboard and optionally to your vistors in your blog.
  4. All In One SEO Pack:  This set of tools allows you to enter your descriptions and keywords for each post, page, and site.  It will take that information and insert it into your pages creating the meta data for you.

We find this set of tools to be essential when setting up a WordPress blog.  There are thousands of plugins available, so if these don't suit your needs, you can easily install and try out others right from within WordPress.
