What is File Transfer Protocol (FTP)?

File Transfer Protocol or FTP is a protocol that is designed to transfer files from one computer to another.  It is also a generic term for a set of applications that use the protocol to transfer files.  FTP uses a client-server architecture where most web hosts support the server side of the architecture.  Users can use an FTP client to connect to the server and transfer website files as well as create, view and delete files and folders on the remote computer.
